Why We Use Information About You and The Type of Information We Collect
All of the information we collect is used for the ultimate goal of securing meaningful protections for decapod crustaceans. However, the key activity areas for which we collect information are as follows.
Campaigning. We use your information to lobby key decision makers and businesses, and to campaign for change for decapods. For example, this might mean using your petition signature to lobby a government minister or using your information to show a company the strength of public feeling about for example, the live boiling of lobsters.
Marketing, PR and communications. We use your information to raise awareness about decapods and our campaigns, and to build our supporter-base so we can help these animals as much as possible. We also use your information to understand what content our audiences are most interested in, how to make our content more engaging and effective, how to reach new audiences, and how to improve our communications overall.
Fundraising. We may ask you to make a donation to support our work.
There are also instances where we need to collect information for record-keeping, for research and reference purposes, or to ensure we are complying with laws and regulations.
In order to support these sets of activities, we aim to build a relationship with you. Depending on who you are and the nature of your relationship with us, we may collect any of the following information about you:
Name and contact details (email address, telephone number, postal address)
IP address and statistical information about your visit(s) to our website (such as which pages you visit and the length of time you spend)
Marketing and communication preferences (so that we only communicate with you in the ways that you want us to)
Engagement with our emails (for instance, emails you opened and links you clicked on)
For a relatively small number of people, we may collect information on associated institutions and companies, positions held, constituency, political party, events attended, photos and video. These would usually be people we could potentially work with or lobby; or they may be donors, potential donors and other key supporters. In the cases of donors and potential donors, we may also collect information on wealth and other causes supported. This type of information can help us to identify and build relationships with people who might be interested in supporting us with a large donation. For a small organisation like Crustacean Compassion, gifts like that can be transformational.
Finally, we may collect CVs, date of birth and/or bank details of freelancers, contractors and volunteers.
How We Collect Your Information
We may collect your information in any of the following ways.
Directly from you – such as when you contact us or complete a Crustacean Compassion form. Sometimes we use third party websites, such as DoGooder.co, Change.org or PayPal, to collect the information from you on our behalf.
Using cookies. A cookie is a small text file containing information, which is created by a website when you visit. One of the main uses is to provide functionality to enhance your experience on the site. Cookies can also help us to understand how people are interacting with our website.
Using data management and marketing software. For example, our email marketing system tracks whether people have opened our emails or clicked on links in our emails.
Through social media websites. We may collect information you have made available on your profile, or use tools on social media platforms to collect details about you. Most of the information collected using platform tools cannot be used to identify you, but it can help us understand how our audience is engaging with our content, and help us find and communicate with the most relevant audiences in the most relevant ways.
From publicly available information. We may carry out desk research to supplement the information we already have about you. For instance, we may search company websites, Companies House, newspaper articles and publications.
From your individual network and representatives. Organisations, stakeholders, agents, volunteers or other people you know may pass your details to us if they think our work would be of interest to you.
What We Do With Your Information
Usually, we use it to communicate with you – often providing you with information you have requested. If you have subscribed to our email list, we will email you campaign news and ways you can get involved. We generally will email you no more than twice per month, and you can unsubscribe at any time – either using the unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email, or by contacting us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Alternatively, we may post you campaign leaflets or telephone you, at your request.
If you are a scientist, academic, veterinarian or other expert, or perhaps if you have a public profile, we may contact you to ask if you would be interested in supporting our campaigns.
If you have signed a petition or taken a similar campaign action, we will share your contact details with the person, company or organisation the action is addressed to.
We also use your details to follow up with you as part of our supporter care procedures.
Occasionally we will use your information to help us find other people like you, who might be interested in supporting our work. For example, we might try to find people with similar demographics and interests to you on social media, who we can then advertise to in their newsfeeds.
However, often we use your information with others’ information in aggregate, for analysis purposes. This helps us to understand how we can improve as an organisation and how we can use our resources most effectively.
Certain companies that supply services to us may have direct access to your information - particularly Access (who host our database), Microsoft and Mailchimp. We also may share your information with contractors and other data processors carrying out work for us. However, we never share your information with them to use for their own marketing purposes.
With your explicit consent, we may share your information with other animal welfare organisations that you have told us you are interested in.
The Legal Bases We Use To Process Your Information
Under the Data Protection Act 2018 we must rely on specific ‘lawful bases’ to process personal information. The lawful bases that Crustacean Compassion relies on are 1) consent, 2) legitimate interest, 3) legal obligation, and 4) contractual obligation.
We only send you marketing emails with your consent, and you are free to withdraw your consent at any time – either by using the unsubscribe link at the bottom of our emails, or by

In the cases where we have obtained information about you indirectly, we usually rely on legitimate interest. When we monitor how you are engaging with our emails, we do so on the basis of legitimate interest. Similarly, if you are a politician, scientist, academic, veterinarian or other expert, or if you are someone with the potential to make a large donation, and we collect information on associated institutions and companies, positions held, constituency, political party, events attended, photos and video, your wealth, and/or other causes you support, we do this on the basis of legitimate interests.
Crustacean Compassion is under a legal obligation or contractual obligation to process certain personal information, but this mainly applies to employee, director, consultant, contractor and service provider data.
Where Your Information Is Stored and How It Is Kept Secure
Crustacean Compassion stores electronic information in pin-protected, password-protected and/or or encrypted systems.
We only hold information about you for as long as it is needed for the purpose(s) it was collected. It is then either anonymised or deleted. How long we retain your information for will depend on your relationship with Crustacean Compassion.
In most cases, we will anonymise your data within three years of your last interaction with us. However, there are certain groups of people whose data we retain for up to five years after their last communication to us. If you are a donor, we will keep your information permanently.

You have the right to ask us for copies of your personal information;
You have the right to ask us to rectify information you think is inaccurate or incomplete;
You have the right to ask us to erase your personal information in certain circumstances;
You have the right to ask us to restrict the processing of your information in certain circumstances;
You have the right to object to the processing of your information in certain circumstances;
You have the right to ask that we transfer the information you gave us to another organisation, or to you, in certain circumstances.
