Kinder Kitchens
At Crustacean Compassion, we’re working hard to end the suffering of crabs, lobsters, prawns and other decapod crustaceans in the food supply chain. Through our Kinder Kitchen campaign, we’re asking chefs, restaurants, and food professionals to lead the change: by taking inhumane treatment of crustaceans off the menu for good.

A Kinder Kitchen is one where animal welfare matters, and is a conscious factor in decision made in the industry, whether or not life crustaceans handled on site. For those working with live animals, it means ensuring they are treated with care at every stage, from sea to plate, caught, stored, handled and killed.
We want to see the removal of cruel outdated practices like boiling alive, suffocated on ice, or out of water. Instead, Kinder Kitchens use science backed, humane techniques like electrical stunning, or choosing pre-slaughtered crustaceans from suppliers.
Behind every plate of seafood, there is a story, and it often includes unnecessary suffering for a variety of reasons. Crabs can have their claws torn off while alive, prawns may undergo eye-stalk ablation, and animals are often kept alive in cramped, dirty tanks—but these practices are avoidable.

Supermarkets and seafood processors are already raising the bar. Now it’s time for the hospitality sector to follow suit. By stepping up, you’re not just improving animal welfare, you’re showing leadership, building trust with consumers and helping to create a more sustainable future for food.
