The King (Crab) Speech – a vision for welfare improvements for crustaceans
Today, beneath the gilded ceilings of the House of Lords, one King delivered his speech to the nation, while we, no less crowned (and rather better armoured), listened from our rocky throne, antennae poised, claws crossed - only to find, once again, that we magnificent 10-legged creatures had been entirely overlooked.

From a boiling alive ban, to a push for full legal protection: 2026 is the year for decapod welfare.
In December 2025, the Government confirmed that live boiling is not acceptable, a major step forward for crustacean welfare. We celebrated this win with MPs, NGOs, and advocates at a Parliamentary event on 21 January 2026, as Crustacean Compassion marks its 10‑year anniversary. Coupled with a new Animal Sentience Committee report urging consistent legal protections for decapods, 2026 is set to be a defining year - if policymakers act.
